travel smart, internationally

"a mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions"

how do you prepare for international travel? traveling does require a little bit of planning ahead. whether it’s your first international trip or you want to better prepare, these little things will make all the difference to your trip.

1. check your passport’s expiration date – many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 3-6 months. expedited passports are expensive.

2. check travel entry advisories/restrictions/requirements.

3. research the country that you’re visiting (best months to travel, high season).

4. safety – as with any country or city, there are good and bad parts.

5. language – try to learn basic phrases. although most countries speak English, locals will appreciate and respect your effort to communicate with them in their own language.

6. jetlag – if visiting somewhere with a big time difference, try to book your flights at night. you can get as much sleep on the plane and it makes your flight go a lot quicker. it also means that you arrive in the morning more refreshed, less tired and you are ready to enjoy your destination.

7. email important documents (passport and license) to yourself.

8. set travel notice with your bank- destination and travel dates.

9. cash – money conversion could be ordered ahead of time for pick up at the bank. this could also be done at the airport.

10. download WhatsApp – messaging and calling for free with WiFi connection.

11. check your International Plan with phone carrier and see what the cost is.

12. share your location in the “Find My” app with close family and friends.

13. take a look at the country’s map and book your stay somewhere centrally located. this will save money and time.

14. figure out how you will get around. in some countries, Uber/Lyft is banned.

15. if you’re going from city to city, it’s easiest to bring a carry-on, this helps with stairs too. pack very smartly and tightly, so everything can fit.

16. add the number and address to the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate in your phone.

17. have the address and phone number for the place you’re staying in case you have to fill out immigration forms.

18. early check in – most hotels and airbnbs, if not all, will accommodate your luggage. also ask if the room is available, if it is, they could allow you to check in early.

19. buy travel adaptor that fits different electrical outlets around the world.

20. check if your electronic device (computer/ hair dryer) is dual voltage or if you need a power converter to transform voltage.

21. is the water safe to drink?
